Subway Art Project

Back in 2009 we undertook a community project to paint murals on the walls of the subway that runs from the Friary estate under the A36 ring-road to Churchill Gardens. Lots of people got involved painting an underwater theme and a space theme.

Over the years they became defaced and covered in graffiti. So in 2016 we contacted Fred Fieber, the original artist, and with the help of our friends from SPLASH! put together a project to involve young people during their autumn half-term break. Wiltshire Council kindly painted over the walls for us and we set to work producing new artwork with the theme of famous music stars.
Over 2 days around 15 young people prepared coloured backgrounds, traced images and painted artwork on to the subway walls.

The pictures look amazing and have attracted attention from the public and the media.

What's more important is the sense of achievement and ownership experienced by the young people. We are praying that the subway remains graffiti-free so that passers-by can admire the artwork for years to come,
